Liberties Lollipop Ladies
Liberties Lollipop Ladies is a community-led campaign celebrating the overlooked contribution of lollipop ladies within Dublin’s Liberties.
Developed through several months of immersive research, the project involved working closely with two local lollipop ladies to gain a deeper understanding of their role within the community. Through conversation and observation, I documented the relationships they had built with local residents and the everyday moments of care, safety and connection that defined their work.
This research revealed a disconnect between the significance of their contribution and the recognition they received. In response, I developed a campaign that brought visibility to their role and celebrated their presence within the neighbourhood.
The project culminated in a site-specific pop-up exhibition installed alongside the crosswalks where they work. Colourful acetate panels displayed moments and stories gathered throughout the research process, mounted on vertical poles that referenced the familiar form of the lollipop sign. By translating these observations into a public installation, the campaign embedded their stories directly within the environment they help to shape every day.
